March 25th is a double celebration for Greece – both a historical and a religious one. Greeks celebrate the beginning of the struggle for independance from the Ottomans in 1821. The Greek-Orthodox church celebrates the Annunciation by Archangel Gabriel to Virgin Mary, and that she should become the mother of Christ.
This double-celebration falls in the Orthodox Lenten period where devout followers abstain from meat and meat by-products. The Orthodox church allows for an exception for Annunciation and that is fish.
Join me on Wednesday, March 25th at Christina’s on Danforth for my creative takes on Greek Lenten fare. All the courses will be prepared using Cretan olive oil from Nisos Importing and Greek wine selections from Victory Wine & Spirits.
